Why Vaccinations are Critical for Doggy Daycare

Prior to your visit to the doggy daycare, your daycare provider will likely ask if your dog is up-to-date on his or her vaccinations. If you want to be ahead of the game, you can fax over the vaccination schedule prior to your visit.

Required Vaccinations for Dogs and Doggy Daycare

The following vaccinations are often required for boarding at any daycare facility:

  • Bordetella (kennel cough) required annually
  • Rabies (either 1 or 3 year vaccine accepted)
  • Distemper or Distemper combo shots such as DHPP or DHLPP
  • Canine Flu (must cover both H3N2 and H3N8 strains)

If your dog is still a young puppy, some doggy daycare centers may not accept puppies until they are vaccinated for one full year for all of the vaccines listed above, with no boosters left to receive.

Many of these vaccines are all completed by 16 weeks of age. If you are unsure as to if your dog will be approved for a doggy daycare, you may want to call and let the daycare know which boosters your dog has had. Your puppy may still be accepted if she meets certain requirements.

Requirements vary by daycare facility.

Do Your Own Research

Take a look at a few daycare facilities and see which one you prefer. What are the various requirements? Which vaccinations are required? What would the daily routine be like?

We will talk more about this later this week.
